cookie season

"Every book has an intrinsic impossibility, which its writer discovers as soon as his first excitement dwindles." --Annie Dillard

with all the distant sadness
of a world going down in flames
we go about our daily chores
with goals already ended & we know it

chrysalis of a pressing doom
we lived not long
with our threadbare · illusions
like dead leaves that cling to a dog

scraps of toilet paper on the floor
that will lie until i am the one to move them
